Practical 2: Leaf Spring (2 Questions)

Q.1 a Semi elliptic multi leaf spring is used for the suspension of the rear axle of a truck. It consists of two extra full length leaves and ten graduated length leaves including the master leaf. The center to center distance between the spring eye is 1.2 m. Bending stress = 600 MPa; E = 207000 MPa. The Spring is designed for a maximum force of 30 kN. The leaves are prestressed so as to equalize in all leaves. Assume Standard width 60 mm; Determine:

(i) Cross section of leaves; and (60 mm and 11.8 mm)

(ii) Deflection (73.28 mm)

Q.2: A Semi eqlliptical laminated spring is made of 50 mm wide and 3 mm thick plates. The length between the supports is 650 mm and the width of the band is 60 mm. The spring has two full length leaves and five graduated leaves. If the spring carries a central load of 1600 N, Find:

  1. Maximum stress in full length and graduated leaves for an initial condition of no stress in the leaves. The maximum stress if the initial stress is provided to cause equal stress when loaded
  2. The deflection

Solution: Given: b = 50 mm; t = 3 mm; 2L1 = 650 mm; l = 60 mm; nf = 2; ng = 5; W = 1600 N.

n = nf+ng = 7

2L = 2L1-l = 590 mm

  1. σf = 18 W L / b*t*t (2*ng+3nf) = 1180 MPa (ANS)

σg =  σf *2/3 = 786.6 MPa (ANS)

2.  σ = 6*W*L/ n*b*t*t    = 899.05 MPa

3. δ = 12* W *L*L*L/ E*b*t*t*t * (2*ng+3nf)  = 108.66 mm

Take E = 210
